There's no shortage of pine trees where I live. Luckily my studio is just om the edge of a cluster of really old white pines. White pines from this area fueled Britain's war against napoleon as the masts and spars needed on warships. And opened the area to pioneers. Lumbering continues to this day. This guy survived a logging sweep during the 40's probably because he was on the side of a steep hill and not worth the trouble to harvest.

Description

'Still Standing' features a natural landscape dominated by a tree in the center. The tree's branches stretch out horizontally and are populated with foliage, suggested by brushstrokes in various tones.

The palette is mostly composed of muted and cool hues, with greys, whites, and blues creating a subdued backdrop that resembles a wintery scene or a foggy atmosphere. Brighter accents of red and turquoise punctuate the canvas, adding vibrancy and drawing the viewer's eye toward the central tree and the areas immediately around it.

The depiction of the tree has an abstract expressionist influence, with visible and spontaneous brushwork that conveys both movement and emotion, rather than focusing on precise details. This dynamic play between color, form, and texture captures the essence of the natural environment, possibly indicating the sway of branches in the wind or the changing light as it filters through the foliage.
