Every day I take my dog out for a walk and it never ceases to amaze me just how much wildlife we have in the area. After every new snowfall, inevitably there appears a new set of tracks. Deer, turkey, rabbit and squirrels are most abundant but more exotic animals such as weasel and coyote are found. An experienced tracker can get an idea of how old tracks are and it gives an insight and connection to the forest around you. With every snowfall, the canvass is wiped clean and a new story starts.

Description

'Fresh Trail' depicts a serene winter landscape with a thick blanket of snow covering the ground. In the foreground, there is a winding trail of animal footprints leading from the lower right, curving gently to the left side of the canvas, which suggests the quiet passage of a creature across the snow. To the left, slender tree trunks emerge from the snow, with hints of brown and orange brush detailing the bare underbrush poking through the white surface.

In the middle ground, more dense vegetation and fallen branches can be seen wedged in the snow, adding textural contrast to the scene. Beyond this area, the landscape opens to reveal a darkened forest edge with trees that have darker trunks and fuller canopies, implying a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees.

Peter employs a palette of whites, blues, earth tones, and dark shadows, using broad strokes to convey the chill and stillness of a winter’s day. The play of light and shadow suggests a time of day when the sun is low, casting long shadows and highlighting the contours of the snowdrifts. The painting captures the tranquil beauty of winter and the subtle interactions between wildlife and the environment.
