There are a lot of trees in my neck of the woods. And spruce trees are particularly ubiquitous, found, as far as I know, in almost every corner of the country. My studio is surrounded by them so I have studied them quite closely. This particular one was situated on a nearby cottage and I painted it as part of a commission.
'Spruce' is a textured, expressive painting depicting a forest scene, primarily composed of blue, green, and earthy tones. A prominent tree trunk rises vertically near the center, its bark rendered in strokes of brown and yellow, contrasting against the cooler background hues. Delicate branches crisscross the composition, some of which are in the foreground, providing a sense of depth. The painting's background is characterized by layered, painterly marks that suggest dense foliage and the dappling of light through a canopy of trees. The interplay between detailed elements and abstracted, painterly gestures gives the artwork a vibrant, energetic feel that conveys the wildness of nature.
